Only a few days left to donate solar eclipse glasses

Glasses have come in from as far away as Nova Scotia, says organizer

There are still a few days left to donate your solar eclipse glasses.

Wendy Martin, a realtor with Rockhaven Realty, put out a call for the glasses after the April 8 eclipse.

She said she now has about 1,000 pairs, filling five bankers boxes at her real estate office. She's already shipped off three of the boxes, through a contact at the Oakville Public Library.

“We’ve had people drop off 20 to 30 pairs, so obviously they have been collecting them from family and friends,” she said.

Martin has received donations from the Waterdown post office, bulk donations from Flamborough residents and has even received a donation from Belliveau Cove, NS.

She is waiting to hear back about another round of donations from McMaster University and the YMCA, but hasn’t confirmed if they are dropping off glasses.

“The community has really rallied behind the idea,” Martin said.

Martin said she is donating the glasses to Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) based in the United States. AWB is accepting solar eclipse glasses and will redistribute them to students in South America for the annular eclipse on Oct. 2, 2024.

In October, the annular eclipse will move through southern Chile and southern Argentina. This eclipse will be partial, unlike the total eclipse seen in the Hamilton region on Monday. The sun will be mostly covered, leaving a ring of fire.

If you would like to donate your used glasses, you can drop them off in the mail slot at 113-170 Rockhaven Ln.
