Muskoka chairs are the canvas for a Waterdown BIA community project to promote local artists and raise money for charity.

The Waterdown Village BIA is launching an art project that will add a splash of colour downtown while celebrating artists and the stories of the diverse communities they represent.

The "Chairing is Caring" program will produce 20-plus Muskoka chairs that will be painted and placed in "outdoor gallery" locations at sponsor businesses throughout the BIA starting in June 2024.

The chairs will offer a colourful place for visitors to sit and relax, and a unique way to learn more about the many different groups that make up the Waterdown commUNITY. Chairs will be auctioned off in September to raise money for local non-profit organizations and causes visually represented through artists’ interpretations.

Artists wanted to paint chairs

Artists are invited to submit an entry form, along with one to two images of their past work, and indicating an equity-deserving group they are aligned with. A brief written description outlining the chair concept must also be included in the submission package. The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 29. The selected artists will be notified by Monday, May 6.

Artists selected to participate will receive an honorarium of $400 for a single Muskoka chair plus a basic paint kit or small credit towards supplies.

Completed chairs will be auctioned to the highest bidder who will then be the sole owner of the chair with 100% of proceeds going to a non-profit organization selected together by the artist and the chair sponsor.
