Family, friends take up Fozzy's fight against brain tumours

Waterdown walk in honour of Nicholas Foster supports Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada

The Fozzy’s Fight walk for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada was a “spectacular” success, according to organizer Jeff Foster.

Around 200 people turned out for the Memorial Park event on Sunday morning to celebrate and remember Nicholas ‘Fozzy’ Foster, a 21-year-old Waterdown man who died after a brave battle with an aggressive brain tumour.

Nicholas was a Waterdown native, a dedicated athlete, and was excelling at Laurentian University in Sudbury when he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. He passed away on Sept. 4, 2019, after a battle that lasted for about 18 months.

His father, Jeff, said this year’s walk has raised around $10,000 so far, blowing past their $5,000 goal — and the final tally still isn’t in.

A handful of Waterdown businesses offered support, like Cobbs Bread, Turkstra Lumber, The Flower Market and Canadian Tire offering prize packs for the walk.

In addition, the Waterdown Dairy Queen is donating 10 per cent of all sales made on Sunday to Fozzy’s Fight.

“Fortinos is still selling cupcakes,” Jeff added, noting he and his family are overwhelmed by the community’s generosity.

Ann Marie Foster, Nicholas’s mother, said in the past three years Fozzy’s Fight has been able to raise around $50,000 total for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, including the fall tire swap fundraiser organized by Waterdown Collision.

“It’s a huge testament to Nicholas, but also to the strength of our small community, which doesn’t feel so small when you’re at the park and you see 200 people out supporting you,” Ann Marie said.

“We’re quite overwhelmed and feeling very blessed to have the love and support of that we have from family and friends.”
